Sensient’s natural color business is rapidly expanding, with the company adding 28,800 square feet of production capacity  to its 500,000-square-foot St. Louis natural color plant, part of broader plans to expand manufacturing capacity, strengthen its supply chain, and hire more personnel in the coming years. As consumers push back on artificial ingredients and U.S. health officials urge a voluntary phaseout of synthetic dyes, food manufacturers are prioritizing a switch to natural colors.

CEO Paul Manning said the shift is early but accelerating, calling it the largest opportunity in Sensient’s history. The company plans heavy investment in production capacity and R&D to capture demand, accepting short-term margin pressure.

Sensient sees about $100 million of its synthetic color sales as candidates for conversion, which typically yields roughly 10:1 revenue multiples because natural shades require higher usage rates. Management expects a major ramp in conversions in late 2026 and intends to move quickly to win the majority of these opportunities.
